StarTech 2-port PCI Express USB 3.0 controller review

While it seems rather too much like stating the obvious to preface this review while discussing how USB 3.0 is "the future", as we move towards the half-way stage of 2010 it's still difficult to really get a handle on how quickly this latest version of the incredibly popular interconnect will take off. Certainly, Intel's lack of interest in adding USB 3.0 support to their chipsets until at least next year isn't a good start, while AMD are also leaving it up to partners to implement support in their own products.

Despite this however, we're already seeing plenty of USB 3.0 products hit the market, while the big-name motherboard manufacturers are also adding support for the interface to their products wherever possible. But what if you don't want to splash out on an entirely new motherboard just to make use of USB 3.0's additional bandwidth and transfer rates?

Thankfully, help is at hand from Startech, who as part of a wide range of USB 3.0 goods are selling a 2-port PCI Express USB 3.0 controller to make for an easy upgrade to any system with a PCI Express slot to spare without breaking the bank.

So, without further ado let's see exactly what USB 3.0 has to offer in performance terms, while also checking out how StarTech's offering compares to an on-board USB 3.0 solution.
